Welcome to BayAreaWatersheds.org
On September 29, 2006, a diverse group of approximately fifty people representing different aspects of watershed management and restoration convened because of a developing consensus over the need to create a more cohesive “watershed community” within the San Francisco Bay Area. This site contains background information, current planning efforts, and discussion forums aimed to further this broad goal.
Background
On September 29, 2006, a diverse group of approximately fifty people representing different aspects of watershed management and restoration convened because of a developing consensus over the need to create a more cohesive “watershed community.” The meeting gathered together a number of entities that often communicate on a minimal or insufficient level. The participants included: city and regional planners; agencies and organizations involved in establishing scientifically-based restoration goals for the Bay watersheds; organizations, government agencies, and consultants engaged in land acquisition, stream and fisheries restoration; organizations involved in collecting and managing information on watershed assessments and projects; agencies and organizations involved in flood damage reduction and stormwater management; entities involved in watershed education; and state and federal regulatory agencies.
Discussion Topics
The four key discussion questions for the meeting were as follows:
- How do we establish priorities and ensure accountability for the limited resources available for Bay area watershed restoration and management work?
- What institutions or organizations do, or could, exist, for ongoing communication?
- What technical and research information do we need in the Bay to do successful watershed restoration work?
- How can we establish new sources of funding for the San Francisco Bay Area?
